GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform) is a JavaScript animation library known for precise control. It animates anything JavaScript can touch: CSS, SVG, canvas and 3D objects.
Strengths: what it’s good at
- Timelines: many animations sequenced, overlapped and controlled as one.
- ScrollTrigger: scenes that pin, scrub and progress with the scroll, reliably across browsers.
- SVG and text: morphing shapes, drawing lines and splitting text into animated parts.
- Consistency: the same behaviour in every browser, with very good performance.
Limits: what to consider
GSAP is powerful enough to overdo it. Long scroll-pinned scenes can hurt usability and accessibility on phones, so they need careful pacing and a calm fallback for reduced motion.
Use: when I choose it
For storytelling pages, product launches and campaign sites with choreographed, scroll-driven animation, and for detailed SVG animation. For lighter interface motion I use Motion.
