Astro
Astro is a web framework for fast, content-driven websites that ship almost no JavaScript by default. Why I build most marketing sites with it.
Request an AI summary
Astro is a web framework for content-driven websites. It renders pages to plain HTML at build time or on the server and only sends JavaScript to the browser where a component actually needs it.
Strengths: what it’s good at
- Speed by default: pages ship little or no JavaScript, which shows directly in the Core Web Vitals.
- Content first: Markdown, content collections with type checks, and connectors for every major headless CMS.
- Islands: interactive parts can use React, Svelte, Vue or plain JavaScript, only where needed.
- SEO and accessibility: clean HTML output, built-in image optimisation, sitemaps and view transitions.
- Hosting freedom: static output runs anywhere; server rendering works on Cloudflare, Node and more.
Limits: what to consider
For highly interactive apps with lots of shared state, a full app framework such as SvelteKit or Next.js is often the better base.
Use: when I choose it
For marketing sites, landing pages, blogs, documentation and multilingual company sites, alone with Markdown or combined with a headless CMS. This website is built with Astro.
